1,167 beers in competition from 232 different breweries.

40 specialized judges who assess the participating beers.

60 medal styles that give national and international recognition to the award-winning beers.

On the weekend of March 05th, 06th and 07th of 2021, the evaluation sessions of the beers presented in the Barcelona Beer Challenge 2021 were held at la Textil. In the heart of Barcelona, we find this multidisciplinary brewpub located in a unique space and, that we cannot wait to see it inaugurated.

There could not be more energy to meet again and desire to work on what we like the most. 40 judges, this year from Spain, were prepared to evaluate 1,167 beers, which came from 232 breweries around the world. The sessions were organized for three days. Because of the sanitary measures, this year there were three judges per table and without rotation among them.

Medals have been awarded to 60 categories: Initially, the categories listed in the BJCP are opened and as a novelty in 2021, the contest’s steering committee has decided to expand the categories to competition to respond to the reality of the market and the sector. You can read the article here.

Do you want to know more about the evaluation process? There are the following steps:

  1. The beers are presented anonymously to the Jury by the personnel assigned by the organization.
  2. Each beer has a reference number so that it can be always identified by the organization.
  3. Entered beers will be tasted in comparison to beers of the same style submitted to the contest.
  4. Once the sessions are over, the organization counts the scores.

We would like to thank all the people who made this event possible. It was emotional and we hope that it will be unique: To BeerBox for providing us with its facilities and made able to receive the beers in the best conditions, to la Textil, for receiving us in its fantastic space and making us feel like at home. To the judges, because they adapted to the situation despite the circumstances, to the whole team that worked during these days at full speed, for their flexibility and good practice and obviously all the breweries that took part in the contest to demonstrate the union of the brewer sector.
