In March 2025, the tastings for the sixth edition of the Molina for Brewers Innovation Award took place. For the tasting, 5 finalists were selected, previously chosen by a specialized jury from among the beers submitted for the Innovation Award within the international Barcelona Beer Challenge. Below, we present the 5 finalists of 2025, showcasing the diversity and impressive creativity found in the sector:
BEER NOSTRUM – Submerged Imperial Oyster Stout This is the unique Imperial Oyster Stout matured for 8 months underwater in the oyster farms of the Ebro Delta, certified as a Biosphere Reserve product. Its innovative brewing process, combining traditional techniques with underwater aging, delivers a unique sensory experience. With oyster shells and meat, sea fermentation, and a strong commitment to sustainability, this beer is positioned as the first in the world with a negative CO₂ balance.
BIRRUM – IRA (Spicy Lager with wasabi and spirulina) A deep green lager made with Japanese wasabi and blue spirulina. The result of a one-year collaboration between Birrum and Yamaaoi to capture and stabilize the delicate wasabi aroma. This creation is part of the “seven beer sins” project, and through its blend of marine character and vegetal spiciness, it offers a truly unique gastronomic experience.
LA TITA RIVERA – Respect! (English IPA with indoor-grown hops) In response to the climate crisis, La Tita Rivera presents an English IPA brewed with hops grown indoors in Galicia. This method reduces water footprint, eliminates pesticides, and uses renewable energy, aiming to set an example of sustainability in the brewing industry.
CERVEZAS ACEITUNERA – Lumbre (Smoked with olive wood) This is a craft beer smoked with olive wood and leaves. The olive leaf contributes bitterness and natural antioxidants thanks to oleuropein. This beer merges Mediterranean tradition with innovation in its brewing process.
BREWERY ‘T DRANKORGEL – Den Diene & De Miene (With white willow) This beer includes salix alba (white willow), a natural source of acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. The result? A beer that, according to its creators, helps prevent hangovers. A bold and radical concept combining beer and health in a single bottle.
These are the five finalist entries that stood out for their originality, innovation, and respect for both the land and the environment. Thank you to all the participating breweries for pushing forward the craft beer scene with fresh, daring, and delicious ideas.
